There is an extensive public transport network in Budapest, with full service from 5am to around 11pm.

You can check the actual traffic information, the plans of every line on the service provider’s website (BKK). Check out the BKK application for iOS and Android .

Season passes and ticket prices

Single tickets in Budapest are valid for one ride on any means or public transport and cost around 350 HUF, but if you buy them from the driver – on buses only - is a bit more expensive. For students we recommend using a monthly pass for public transport, which costs approximately 3450 HUF. You can buy your monthly passes or tickets at BKK offices or ticket machines all around the city.

The pass allows you to travel as many times as you want in Budapest. A student card may need to be presented upon purchase. You should always keep your student card on you when travelling in case a ticket inspector asks to see it.

Metro (underground)
There are four metro lines running across the city, probably the fastest means of public transportation. The biggest junction downtown is Deak Ferenc square.

Buses
There are many bus lines running across the city - during peak hours in the city, they may be slowed down by traffic jams.

Trams
As they run on closed tracks and quite frequently, tramlines are fast and effective ways of getting from one place to another in Budapest, especially lines 4 and 6, which have a nonstop night service as well.

Bicycle
The MOL "Bubi" public bike-sharing scheme is a new mode of public transport in Budapest, which consists of 98 docking stations / and 1,150 bicycles. You can use them every day around the clock with a quarterly, annual or a semi-annual pass, or a ticket. More information here.

HEV – suburban railway system
These are electric trains connecting suburbs and the city, providing fast transportation.

Trolley buses
These are electric buses on some lines. There are not many lines, but they can be a unique experience and a fun means of travel.

Night bus service
The usual frequency of the service is 20-30 minutes to one hour, also depending on the line. Please be aware that different rules apply, for example, you can only get on the bus at the front door and you have to show your ticket or pass to the driver.
