Guidance on getting or extending a Hungarian residence permit (non-EU students) / registering with the immigration authority (EU students)

1. Students arriving with a Type D visa (applying for a residence permit from abroad)

You must get your residence permit within 30 days of arrival in Hungary. It takes 3-4 weeks to produce the card after your visa is issued, so it may not be ready immediately when you arrive.

Your residence permit will be sent to IBS, where you can pick it up at the Centre for Student Services - do not go the immigration office!

The residence permit allows you to stay in Hungary, and to visit other countries belonging to the Schengen region and stay there for no more than 90 days as a tourist.

If the accommodation is different than the address you provided to the Embassy when you applied for your visa, the new accommodation must be reported online to the immigration office using this form (see below).

2. Non-EU students arriving without a visa requirement (applying for a residence permit from Hungary)

You have to apply for a residence permit within 90 days after crossing the Hungarian border.

The residence permit allows you to stay in Hungary, and to visit other countries belonging to the Schengen region and stay there for no more than 90 days as a tourist.

Application for a new residence permit can be submitted ONLY from Hungary and only online (see below).

3. Students from the EU

You are required to register with the immigration office within 90 days upon your arrival in Hungary, online (see below).

4. Extension of a residence permit

If your residence permit expires, you need to extend it in good time.

You have to apply for extension 45-50 days before it expires, because the immigration office counts the procedure time from the confirmation of recording your request, which may take some time. If your application for an extension is not confirmed at least 30-days before expiry, you can only submit a NEW application (not an extension) according to procedure No. 2 above.

Documents

Before you apply for a residence permit (non-EU students) or register (EU students), please make sure you have all the necessary documents:

A. Application for a new residence permit:

  • copy of your passport – All pages where there is a stamp or note (no need to copy empty pages)
  • student status certificate (issued by IBS)
  • bank account statement – The account owner should be you (student) or the parent. If it is the parent, a Declaration from the owner of the bank account is required. There must be enough money on the account to cover the living costs in Hungary; and regular payments or income must be received to the account.
  • If you are under 18 when you enrol at IBS, you are officially an underage person in Hungary. As a result, you will have to bear in mind some legal restrictions when coming to Hungary. You alone cannot sign any official documents including the IBS Education Contract or your residence permit application without your parent/guardian https://www.ibs-b.hu/en/how-to-apply/age-requirement/. Please find the authorization form in two languages
  • accommodation reporting form (completed, signed by landlord as well)
  • health insurance (if you do not have one, you can buy it at IBS)

B. Extension of your residence permit:

  • in addition to the above checklist, you will have to submit the Transcript of your academic results
  • if the address of your accommodation has changed, or the address card is lost, you must report it to the immigration office
  • if the address of your accommodation has not changed, do not start a new ’case’ for the accommodation

Procedure step-by-step

  • Create your account / register as a private person on the website of the NATIONAL DIRECTORATE-GENERAL FOR ALIENS POLICING: https://enterhungary.gov.hu/eh/?en
Follow the instructions in this document.
  • Select ’residence permit’ – then ’study or study mobility’
    • essential questions: application for a new residence permit or extension
    • students from Ukraine and Belarus are exempt from fee payment
    • the fee for the 1st residence permit (online): 24,000 HUF paid by card
    • the fee for an extension (online): 23,000 HUF
    • in case the application is rejected, the fee for the appeal: 47,000 HUF
    • for an extension you must submit your application 32 days before your residence permit expires (the 30 days are counted from the time they start the process – that is why you have to submit your documents earlier)
    • if you miss the deadline, you cannot apply for an extension within the last 30 days; instead, you must apply for a new residence permit – in this case you need to explain why you missed the deadline
  • Provide your data – please note that the residence permit can be given for a maximum of 2 years, so choose the maximum as the planned period
  • Indicate the purpose of your stay
  • Upload the required documents – listed above
  • Submit your documents.
    • If anything is missing, the office will notify you within 24 hours (check this site and your emails regularly)
    • Please wait for notification. You should only go to the office if you are requested to go there in person (you have to go there once to have your biometrical data taken)
    • Students who wish to stay in Hungary after graduation can apply for a “job search visa” (to get this, you have to prove that you are searching for a job); for the required documents please check this page, or for “other purpose” (please check this page for eligibility.). Both visa types must be requested on the same website: https://enterhungary.gov.hu/eh/?en
