To be legally employed as a foreign national in Hungary, you must apply for a Social Insurance Identification Card (Taj card). Applying for a social security card is a relatively complex task. The Taj card can be applied for in person or by mail.

Conditions for applying for a TAJcard

Third country nationals can apply for a TAJ card only if they have a valid residence permit and a Hungarian address. The TAJ card of a third-country national is valid for as long as his/her residence permit is valid. If the residence permit is extended, the social security card must be extended again.

European Union citizens will need a "registration certificate" to apply for a social security card, not a residence permit.

The application procedure

To apply for a TAJ card in person, you must visit the Customer Service at least three times before you receive your social security card.

Step 1: Place the order and submit your application
(first trip to the Customer Service)

The first step in applying for a social security card is to order and request the creation of a TAJ number. For this step, all the necessary documents are required (see above).

If the documents are in order, they will be collected by the administrator. The TAJ number will be issued within 8 days. If requested, you will be notified by telephone when the social security number is ready.

Step 2: Receiving the social security number
(second trip to the customer service)

Once the authority has issued the social security number, you must collect it from the Customer Service Centre if you go in person. You will need to bring the following documents with you:

  • The receipt you received when you submitted your application
  • If the claimant is not the applicant, an authorisation
  • Copy of the employer's specimen signature
  • Copy of the order form
  • If not the client, an authorisation from the employer

If all the documents are presented in order, the authority will provide you with a written information document on the TAJ number

Step 3: Reporting the TAJ number to the tax authority

The employer's accountant must report the TAJ number provided electronically (via the client portal) to the tax authority using form NAV20T1041. Failure to report may be punishable by a default fine of HUF 100 000. The form NAV20T1041 and the confirmation of the correctness of the declaration must be printed.

Step 4: Receiving the TAJ card (third trip to the customer service)

With the printed NAV20T1041, the confirmation of the declaration, the authorisation to receive the social security card, and the identity card of the authorised person, you must go to the customer service again, where the administrator will create the TAJ card.

How long does it take?

As a general rule, the process must be completed within 60 days of receipt of the application. If all the data and documents have been submitted, the authority will generate the TAJ number within 8 days.
