Budapest, voted 2nd best city in the world by Condé Nast Traveller is situated right in the heart of Europe along the two banks of the River Danube. It is a lively, friendly city with a continental climate. It has succeeded in adapting to the modern world while preserving its rich historic past. The city offers a wealth of entertainment and cultural activities, museums, concerts, theatres, opera as well as discos, jazz clubs, elegant shops and good food. An excellent inexpensive public transport system of buses, trolley buses, trams and underground lines extends all across the city.
Budapest is the capital of Hungary and the largest city with over 1.7 million inhabitants. Budapest became a single city occupying both banks of the river Danube with a unification in 1873 of right-bank Buda and Óbuda with left-bank Pest.
The city has 23 districts, IBS is in the third district in Buda.
Regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, its extensive World Heritage Site includes the banks of the Danube, the Buda Castle Quarter, Andrássy Avenue, Heroes' Square and the Millennium Underground Railway, the second oldest in the world.
Considered an important hub in Central Europe, the city ranked 3rd (out of 65 cities) on Mastercard's Emerging Markets Index (2008), and ranked as the most liveable Central/Eastern European city on EIU's quality of life index (both 2009 & 2010). It is also ranked as "Europe's 7th most idyllic place to live" by Forbes. It attracts about 2.3 million tourists a year.
Budapest is a city famed for its nightlife. There are hundreds of music pubs, bars, and cafés open around the clock.
There are also plenty of other ideas for a fun night out, ranging from theatres and jazz venues to casinos and rock/pop events. For those after a dose of culture, a visit to the city’s majestic State Opera House, the brand new National Theatre or the concert hall of the Palace of Arts makes for an unforgettable evening.

Budapest has a relatively inexpensive public transport system owned by the state with 3 underground lines (’metró’ in Hungarian), 5 suburban train lines (’HÉV’ in Hungarian), trams, buses and trolley buses. The fastest way to get to a place is by vehicles that run on rails (metro, suburban trains and trams).
Tickets or passes are checked by inspectors who move freely on buses and trams in teams and ask for your ticket. Nowadays in most metro stations uniformed inspectors stand either at the entrance or the exit and everybody has to show their tickets or passes. With your student card you are entitled to buy a student pass (valid for 30 days).

Most banks require a valid residence permit and an address card to opening a bank account. However, some banks allow foreigners to open an account with just the presentation of a passport.
You will be charged a fee to open the account and you will also have to pay to get a bank card and for account management services. Banks are usually open on weekdays from 8 am until 4-5 pm, they are not open on Saturdays except some branches in shopping malls/centres.
Credit Cards, Debit Cards and Cheques
All the most popular credit, debit and charge cards (AMEX, Diners Club, Cirrus, EnRoute, Euro/Mastercard, JCB and VISA) can be used in banks and in ATM’s to withdraw Forints, and to pay bills in hotels, restaurants and shops. Look for the signs displayed at the entrance showing which cards are accepted.
Currency exchange machines and ATMs operate 24 hours a day in Budapest. Major credit cards are accepted.
There is usually a commission for cashing traveler's cheques at banks and you can use your bank or credit card to get cash at post offices. Please note that stores usually will not accept traveler’s cheques.
